Mactan shrine has got a history behind it. According to legend, the shrine belonged to King Rajah Humabon, who ruled over the Visayan Kingdom before he converted to Christianity. He later gave his Kingdom to St. James, which eventually became the city of Jolo. After conversion, the king ordered all pagodas and temples to be destroyed so that people would stop worshipping idols. But after some time passed, the king realized that most of the population still worshipped their gods.
