When you’re trying to be a responsible person that cares about the environment, you know you need to shop sustainably. Sustainable processes and materials can be found in everything we purchase from food to clothing. There are many fashion brands out there today who are breaking the mold and proudly offering sustainable apparel in tops and bottoms, and even swimwear and lingerie. Here’s what to look for when you’re shopping for stylish and sustainable lingerie.
Bamboo Fabrics
Bamboo is a super-fast growing crop that regenerates on its own without the use of fertilizers. It requires little water and the plant itself consumes large amounts of carbon dioxide. Believe it or not, bamboo can be processed into an incredibly soft material for clothing. It also has many benefits as a fabric. It’s hypoallergenic, sweat-resistant, eco-friendly, wrinkle-resistant, and has excellent ventilation. These are all great qualities to have when wearing lingerie.
Organic Cotton Standard Certification (OCS)
The OCS certification is given to cotton that contains at least 5%-100% organic raw materials. This standard can also be used to trace the process of the raw material all the way to the final product. The OCS certification is always completed by a trusted third-party organization that independently assesses the organic content of the product through transparency and consistency. In other words, lingerie made from OCS cotton materials is grown organically without harmful pesticides and confidently sourced.
Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
GOTS is similar to the OCS Standard in that you can be sure the materials are organic, grown without pesticides and fertilizers, and certified by a third party organization. GOTS guidelines are more strict, however. The organic content must be at least 70% and there are restrictions on the fibers that are allowed to be blended with it. GOTS also has additional processing requirements that must be met to achieve the standard. Any lingerie made with GOTS material is definitely a high-quality and sustainably sourced item!
Global Recycled Standard (GRS)
Not all sustainable materials for clothing need to be grown or made from scratch. Fabrics made from recycling processes are a very sustainable method. Manufacturers working with the Global Recycled Standard can achieve those super soft and silky smooth fabrics you long for in fashionable lingerie. GRS is a standard that aims to reduce the harmful impact of production on the environment and drive high percentages of recycled contents.
Hemp
Hemp is a type of cannabis plant that is growing in popularity due to its legalization in many states to grow it. It’s a quick-growing plant that doesn’t require pesticides and doesn’t exhaust the soil because it actually returns 60%-70% of the nutrients it draws back to the soil. It also requires less water when compared to cotton in both the growing and production processes. And, because it can be grown densely, it requires less cultivating land. It makes for a durable, non-irritating fabric that’s often used in place of cotton.
Tencel
Tencel is a lightweight cellulose fabric that is made by dissolving wood pulp. It is said to be 50% more absorbent than cotton, yet requires less energy and water to produce. The chemical solvents used to produce this fabric are managed in a closed-loop, recycled system, which reduces dangerous waste. Tencel fabric also has moisture-wicking and anti-bacterial properties, which make it great for activewear and lingerie.
Sustainable Lingerie
Sustainable lingerie makes a wonderful gift for yourself or a loved one who truly cares about the environment! We encourage you to look for these certification fabric standards and sustainable fabrics when shopping for lingerie and other apparel.
